Well I’m including this link to someone else’s review of the book as I never finshed it. It started out ok but I just really couldn’t find the rhythm to the story. I didn’t like the beginning of having to guess who the characters are but hey. I borrowed it from the library and it seems someone had the same problem as I as almost every third page had the corner creesed to mark it’s place. It seems I found myself stopping just as often. I’m sure it’s a great book and had I continued or devoted the time to it I might have also thought so but couldn’t do it. It happens from time to time I just can’t get into a book. Anyhow I think I’ll read the Shipping News next which was a great movie and I’m exicted for the book. I’ll let you know how I find that one.

Book :: Late Nights on Air
What an amazing book, the 2007 Giller Prize winner. After reading this book I need to read more about John Hornby, mainly George Whalley’s Biography “The Legend of John Hornby” Macmillan 1962. Also the CBC radio drama “Death in the Barren Ground : A Narrative of Jonh Hornby’s Last Journey”. It is obvious that Elizabeth Hay as spend quite a bit of time in the Far North “Yellowknife”. It is an area I’ve always wanted to see but never with any kind of urgency. After reading this book I just feel compelled to visit the north and I feel it is going to have to happen sooner rather than later. The characters in the book just come alive, living in the north and working for a small town Radio Station. The beauty of the North is comes alive and the harsh reality of the winters and the darkness leave you with the chilll they must have felt. I have fallen in love with the characters, the quotes, the beauty and passion that she lays upon me with her great words. I could pick this book up and read it again right now it was that amazing. I’m not really going to get into the story I just have to tell you to read this book…
Library :: I have a card
Wow I’ve had a library card for a few months now but had yet to actually check something out. Well I finally did. All part of the resolution to purchase nothing new. So I went and checked out two books and will read them in the following order, Late nights on air and New Moon. I try and read the Giller books so this is another Giller book and well New Moon I just have to keep reading the series.
Book :: Dear John
And again I’m writing about a romance novel and this was a great book written by Nicholas Sparks, the author of The Notebook. This was a great book, leaving you feeling very empty and unfulfilled in the end when it comes to the two main characters John and Savannah. The last hundred pages I just couldn’t stop turning sitting in the West Town having pints. John was an army guy and unable to really have a relationship in his life, not many real friends, difficult relationship with his father and girls were all the wrong ones. On leave he meets Savannah doing a chivalrous deed on the peer and embarks on a life changing journey. The is duty abroad, 911 back home and loss. In the end he does what he does best, chivalry. I loved this book even though I was hoping for a different outcome. The movie is coming out soon and it actually looks good.
Novel :: Twilight (I sparkle)
Ok so I finaly get the sparkle thing. I’m sure in a few years this will help me answer some Trivial Pursuit questions or something. I have 4 daughters one of whom is the required age for Twilight Reading. No for those of you that are my age I’m not talking about the Twilight Zone. I’m talking about Twilight the Novel. You know Team Edward. Well I haven’t read New Moon yet so can’t say if I’m team Edward yet. Oh just the fact that I can make that joke and get it is scarry. Anyhow I finished the novel finaly after much delay. I’ve put it down and picked it up a few time and Christmas got in the way as well as the ongoing drama that is Separation and Divorce. Anyhow I picked it up again the other day and what did it ever get going. It’s a teen romance novel till it gets to the fight scene. There is Bella and Edward the main characters. Now did the author give her that name after the most famous vampires in history, Bela Lugosi? Anyhow just a question, sure if I google it I’ll find out. Anyhow it’s a typical love story, girl meets vampire, girl loves vampire does girl marry vampire? Well it’s a good read and the goal was to better understand my daughters age, culture and what they are up to. I did enjoy the novel, easy read, fast enough paced, lots of action and trouble that Bella can get into. Edward is the Vampire as James Dean was to Rebel without a Cause! Cool, collected, thin quiet and the god of high school. Anyhow I really enjoyed the book and it was easy to read but the fight scene in Chapter 22 I think it was like the fight scene in True Romance. I couldn’t put it down from that point on. It finished like a teen novel with prom and all but at least the writer made some references to a great Stephen King Novel (Carrie). I’ve just picked up Dear John as my next book but after that will surely end up reading New Moon.
Book :: The Lovely Bones
I loved this book. I’m trying to think about what to write and someone asked me “did you love it?” Yes I loved it. This book moved me, this book touched every part of me. Touched my father part, my childhood part, the love, the passion the wanton desires of growing up and then having it all ripped away.
The concept of looking down watching the aftermath of your demise. You are taken away, your family is left to cope if that is what you want to call it and you can do nothing but observe. I read the book and I learn about loss and there were passages and pages that really dragged me into the loss. Feeling for the family! Could it be rendered worse by not finding the body but parts? Watching life move on and the realization that you can’t guide it. That it will do what it will do, that people will move forward and you will never truly be forgotten. I loved this book and am looking forward to the movie. Some reviews of the film!
Book :: The Time Traveler’s Wife
WOW! WOW! WOW! What an amazing book. It took me much longer to read than I had planned but you have to read around the rest of your life. This book was an amazing book and it’s alwasy so much better when the idea, the concept the style is original. This book was like nothing else I’ve read. With that it was a bit difficult in the beginning as it kept jumping from point in time to point in time and the two main characters are always different ages, in different places. But what an amazing read. Henry is a time traveler moving around and at times even running into himself. He has a DNA mutation that gives him this ability which is a curse. Always arriving in his new place naked and he meets Claire, the love of his life. She is a chile and he is a man but every time they meet their friendship grows and their love blooms. I’m not going to give the book away, nor it’s ending which could be sad or joyus depending. I love all it’s twists. With a time traveler that can run across himself, go back and see his mother before she passed. So much to offer. I recommend this book and now it’s time to see the movie. I have already questioned a few people on some key parts in the book and they aren’t in the book, how sad for the movie. Anyhow I hope you enjoy the book.
Book :: Heart Shaped Box
Well it took me far to long to finish this book. There has been so much going on lately that I just couldn’t devote the time I wanted to the book. I got through it though so what did I think? I don’t normaly read horrors as a genre but after this I think I will have to read a few more. Great book although the character build up in the beginning was a bit long but not unlike his dad (Stephen King) Jo Hill does a great job and build a great image for you of who these people are both in looks and spirit. So the main character is Judas Cloyne over the hill Metal Rock star, think Judas Priest, Ozzy etc. He’s used drugs, women and watches his bandmates die to early. He is a collector of the bizare morbid gothic objects including skulls, snuff films etc. So he buys a haunted suit and it turns out being haunted by the step father of a former groupie girlfriend. Anyhow the ghost Cradock is trying to kill Judas and his girlfriend Marybeth “Georgia” because he feels Judas is responsible for the death of his step-daughter Anna “Florida”. All his groupie women are named by him after the state they are from, guess just to show that he is rather a shallow rocker. The adventures leads him to the truth about Anna’s death and also helps bring to light his true love for Georgia. Anyhow it was a great read and the ending was particularly fun. This will be made into a movie but I’m not sure when they are looking at starting. It is being developed by the oscar nominated Neil Jordan who wrote the Crying Game and also wrote and directed Michael Collins. Anyhow looking forward to it.
Running Log :: and some Bloodletting?
Man I wish I had my camera today along my run. I ran the Chedoke Trail again today but took it further at the top heading all the way to the foot bridge at the 403. Today was a 7 mile run with a 1 min walk per mile. Ran the 7 mile in 57:21 for an average pace of 8:11 min miles and if you factor in the minute walk I’m looking at an actual run pace of 7:30 minute miles. Along my run they were filming somthing at the Chedoke Golf Course. They put a red cross on the clubhouse and it almost looked like an old MASH building. I asked what they were filming and they said Bloodletting base on the book Bloodletting and other miraculous cures. I’ve read that book and it was awesome. It will be a miniseries. I can’t wait to see it when it comes out now. It’s being filmed in Toronto and Hamilton. Here is a bit of information for those of you that are curious. http://www.vincentlam.ca/090608-tv-series.php
Book :: The Reader
Wow! I really enjoyed this book. All the different aspects of the book were great, the war, the relationship, the loss and the depths one goes to all to avoid humiliation. A downward spiral of the greatest magnitude all because one is illeterate. It’s funny because my first real relationship in my life was with someone of much greater intlect than myself. A studious person who grew frustrated with the fact that I would never pick up a book. In grade 10 I was tested with regards to my reading comprehension and vocabulary and tested to somewhere around a grade 7 level. My studious friend gave me a book and suggested I begin reading. Tired of the back and forth I opened the book and became lost in the “Adult” content. I was around seventeen at the time. Upon finishing the book I discovered imagery and with that a passion for reading. I’ve been reading ever since. It is the greatest gift I’ve been given and all of my later successes in life were built upon this gift and the relationship I had found myself in at that time. There are other aspects of the book that really touched me and I was able to relate to on the deepest of levels and for that, the book is one I will probably read again in the future.
