Running Log :: still healing

200px-microserfs.jpgWell the leg is still healing. I did a 3 (3.07 to be exact) mile run tonight without the walk breaks in 27:20 for pace of 8:54 min miles. The left shin started to feel tired after approximately two miles but nothing serious, I slowed a bit and concentrated on a proper landing. My left ankle and tendon around the ankle still required quite a bit of strengthening. I’ll have to get some pics of where I’ve been running. I run through this cemetery beside the police station on Rymal Road and today the was quite different from a week ago, there are buds on the trees and everything is looking quite green. It wasn’t warm this evening and there was quite a good head wind for the majority of the run as I walked the last mile home to get a good cool down and stretch in. Put an ice pack on it when I got home while reading microserfs (douglas coupland book) that someone passed along to me. Anyhow tomorrow we’ll so stair machine or elliptical at the gym. Time to get working on the taxes, they are due tomorrow you know LOL!

Human behavior (microserfs)

What is human behavior except trying to prove we are not animals. I think we have strayed so far away from our animal origins that we are bent on creating a new, supra-animal identity.
Two lines from microserfs book that ring true!

CARDIO + KIDS don’t mix

leg.JPGWell last nights 35 min cardio (stair machine) session was cut short with the interuptions of the kids. Did get in about 20 min I figure. Probably just as well the legs were very heavy so today will be my rest day, I’ll just do a workout tonight.  Try and get a run in tomorrow, no more than 20 min and see how the leg feels afterwards. The goal here is to be able to run at a reduced pace and have the leg continue it’s recovery. If it’s not getting better keep getting the weight off with other forms of cardio and do some pool running again. The most important at this time is to get back to my marathon weight and keep my cardio elevated. Over the next couple weeks need to get the running to between 30 and 40 min and be able to do 1 hour elliptical sessions witout to much difficulty. That will ensure that I’m able to start training for Toronto by the end of May (24 weekend to be exact).

Down 10 lbs : Cardio Going Well

Well I’m down ten since ramping up the cardio and not having the beers (no I didn’t drink that much). Anyhow I figure another 15 lbs would be great and would take a great load off the sore leg. A contributing factor to the sore shins is trying to build up mileage to where I was with the extra weight. The body isn’t used to carrying that extra weight at those distances so the weight has to go. At the moment I’m still running just not very much, but quality runs. Extra cardio has been the stair machine. I did 30 min last night again at level two for 500 Cals and 1411 stairs. Man I’m so burned out after that. Tonight we’ll go for 35 min.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS

Well I’m building up my mileage and can still fell the pain in the left shin and am doing balance and strengthning exercises but most of all I’m listening to my body. Knowing when to not push it and today was one of those days. Got on the stair machine and did 30 min session there for my cardio. I need to get weight off. I’m not going to be able to increase my mileage without injury at the level I would like if I don’t shed 15-20 lbs. I can run but will need to keep my running sessions between 30 and 35 min at the moment till the weight is down. Tomorrow will be elliptical and workout day. Try and get 40-45 min elliptical session in.

Running LOG :: Inside and still tender

habs.jpgWell ran inside last night and the leg is still tender. Some days are much better. Will have to pull back on the mileage and stick around this 3 mile mark for a bit and just play with pace and gait. I’ll make up for the difference in non impact exercises (elliptical and stairs machine). I’ll also get back to the pool running also. I really need to keep working on the stability issue in the left leg and the strength training. I’ll keep you all posted. I realize there are quite a few readers that find themselves comming back so this is for you.
Also I was a bit late getting to gym last night because as those of you who know me I’m not much of a hockey fan during regular season (go to a couple games a year) but come playoff time I seem to love watching as long as there is a Canadien team in there. Last night game 7 Montreal/Boston, what an awesome game.  Who would have thought when Price played for the Hamilton Bulldogs on year and 12 days ago that he would be here today.

Running Log :: Gorgeous day

Well 18C is perfect for run. Slight breeze for part of my run. I ran for 3.57 miles today, I pulled up shy of the 4 mile mark for fear of hurting my left leg. It’s a bit tender at the moment and I really don’t need to injure it. Will work hard this week on stretching and strengthening. Anyhow I did the 3.57 miles in 33:36. That’s quite slow but I had 2 X 1 minute walks thrown in there and I rely don’t need to take two steps back in training on my road to recovery. This has been quite difficult and discouraging and I just need to get back healthy as far as the left leg and ankle go. Anyhow I very much enjoyed running and should be ready to start training in May for my September Marathon (Toronto Waterfront).

Running Log :: Ran Outside

weather_apr.jpgWell this weather is awesome. I ran outside last night for 4 miles. I’m writing this blog entry today because I wanted to see how my legs would be and document it. So with that the legs feel great. I’m quite surprised. I’m running and they are healing. I’m not pushing it though, as tempted as I am with each run. Did the 4 miles in 35:58. Was running 10 and 1’s (run 10 walk 1min). I did the first mile in 8:10 min, I’m trying not to go hard. I’ll be going for a run tonight as well and again the weather is awesome, not a cloud in the sky.

Running Log :: giddy up

Well another night of running (inside again). Was great run for 31 minutes. Two 1 minute beakes in there and felt great afterwards. I’m writing this the next morning. The one thing I’ve changed which I used to do a couple years ago is I’ve begun taking a protein shake right after the run and before the stretching. So anyhow I did 3.34 miles in 31 minutes. I was keeping a  pace of just over 9 minute miles this time around. No ab workout as they hurt from the night before. We’ll look after them today.

Running Log:: Back to gym

Well what a run tonight (on the treadmill). Did 3.24 miles in 30 min (walked for 1 min at 10 and 20 min mark). Pace was around 8:40 min mile for the running portion. Really worked on my gait and more specifically my landing and push off on the left leg. All seemed good, the leg feels pretty good at the moment. Just going to go ice it. Also did ab workout. Man have I ever let those go, it’s a long road back that’s for certain.
